High Court of PA says municipal elections cannot be postponed (Jerusalem Post)

High Court of justice the Palestinian Authority cancelled Monday the PA Government's decision to postpone municipal elections which were supposed to be held on 17 July 2010.

The Court considered that the decision to cancel the vote was in violation of article 10 of the Act of 2005 and undermined democratic foundations.

The Court ruled that the holding of elections was a democratic law which do not threaten security and peace that the PA has claimed.

The PA Government justified its decision by stating that he wanted to protect "national unity" - a reference to the efforts of reconciliation between Hamas and Fatah.

Spokesperson for various Palestinian factions welcomed the verdict of seven pages. Omar Nazal, spokesman for the territory for all [Al - Watan Lilkul], said the decision reflects the "independence and impartiality" Palestinian judicial system.
