Open thread for night owls: young eco-leaders turn the tide? (Dailykos.com)

In the Earth Island journal editor Jason Mark writes, Talkine ' Bout My Generation - CAN reinvigorate a new group of young leaders in environmental green "grassroots spirit?

Global headquarters of the international climate justice campaign 350.CHF org is located on the 14th floor of a building in downtown Oakland, California. Although "global headquarters" may be over-stating things: offices consist of three bedrooms with worn carpets and a collection of regenerated desks arranged in a Tetris-like pattern. When I visited an afternoon sunny mid-September, the place was strangely silent that activists were only a few weeks of another event in the world, requiring sharp greenhouse gas reductions. The organizers had already registered 2 700 events in 100 countries, scheduled for 10-10 - 10; at the time when the date of arrival, they would clock in approximately 7300 actions everywhere in the world. However, the Office had none of the frenzy of war-room one associated with a policy operation in the lead-up to election day. Elegant - si rumpled - and youth activists were at their desk quietly send emails, instant messages compression, update blogs and posting updates to Twitter. ...

With the exception of a few entrepreneurs engaged in the weeks before 10-10-10, the staff of 350 is half of the age of the spokesperson for the campaign and figurehead (unpaid), author-activist Bill McKibben. The people who brought you what CNN called "greatest demonstration in history" were not old enough to vote in 2000.

Years the Medal of honour of 350 activists could make their extraordinary accomplishments, but among environmental organizations their youth is not unique. For the first time in a generation, a number of important ecological groups headed by persons under the age of 40. Phil Radford, who took last year, Greenpeace USA is 34 years old, as well as Phèdre Ellis-Lamkins green for all. Erich Pica, the new Executive Director of friends of the Earth to the United States is 36. Becky Tarbotton, a Canadian age of 38 years, has been exploited to Rainforest Action Network. In the clearest sign of a change of generation in the leadership in the spring of last Board of Directors of the Sierra Club - the oldest and largest environmental organization American - harvested old 39-year-old Mike Brown at the head of the age-old group.

Transfer leadership away baby boomers who built Environmentalism today arrives to try when for the Greens. Despite minor victories, 2010 was an ecologists annus horribilis. The defeat of the Senate of the same legislation low to limit greenhouse gas emissions was a body blow. Perhaps more demoralizing was BP disaster in the Gulf of the Mexico: the worst oil spill in the history of the United States is the last summer in Washington, D.c., at least, just raised shoulders.

Twins reverse sparked something of a search for the soul. On green blogs, no there was no shortage of theories and counter-theorizing about what has happened. Environmental organizations branch offices were occupied this fall with strategy sessions to find out how to do better. When the heads of the most important ecological groups met in New Orleans in September, the defeat of climate legislation dominated the agenda. The environmental movement strives to rediscover what it requires to fulfill its political aspirations - and it very quickly, given relentless threats of climate change, collapse of the ocean and the scarcity of fresh water.

"I do think it's a secret that the environmental community is a point of inflection," Erich Pica friends of the Earth told me. In our conversation, pica has been impressive candid about gaps in environmental policy, up to as regards the question whether it could even say that green "movement" exists. "We spent just the last probably six years to try to pass emissions cap and trade legislation." …And we lost. We had a few victories en route, we shouldn't undervalue the. But we lost in the big enchilada. Looking at it, we should ask some serious issues. »...

It is not a political agent who does not feel frustration just with Washington, DC. This is not a radical; view even in the corridors of power, he became the wisdom that our national governance is allowed to dismantle. In an interview with Vanity Fair, outgoing head of the White House staff Rahm Emmanuel describes the dysfunction of the capital, with a unique, evocative Word: "Fucknutsville". I'm not sure that what it means, but it seem good.

Mike Brown, the new Executive Director of the Sierra Club (left), Erich Pica friends of the Earth (Centre) and may Boeve 350.CHF org (right) are some of the less than 40 people who take the direction of the environmental movement.

At Daily Kos on this date in 2007:

The Senate Judiciary Committee was joined by his counterpart of the House yesterday by voting to send contempt citations of Congress to speak against witness who refused to comply with Congressional subpoenas.

The Senate Judiciary Committee approved against Rove and Bolten contempt on a vote of 12 to 7 citations, reject the position of the White House's two closest to President Bush's advisers work is covered by executive privilege.

Earlier this year, Judiciary Committee cited Bolten and former adviser to White House Harriet Miers e. for contempt. But action by a Chamber of Congress is still weeks or months. Legislators and the said aid that neither House takes the issue until the end of January at the earliest.

Procedurally, it updates the Senate on the same footing as the House of Commons. The Judicial Committee said that disregard of these assignments is contempt. Both the House and the Senate, complete body must vote to approve these citations. If they do, they will be designated for the Prosecutor to United States for the district of Columbia, to prosecution.
