Ministry spokesman P.J. Crowley, explains surgery at George Washington University Hospital completed Saturday morning on the 69 year old Holbrooke and that his family is with him.
Holbrooke was appointed to his position by President Barack Obama at the beginning of his administration.
Seasoned diplomat is perhaps best known to help broker in 1995 agreement that ended the war in Bosnia.
