« Pelosi takes break from tax cut wars, heads for Oslo | Main December 10, 2010 Sanders kept on talking
Guess Vermont Sen. Bernard Sanders made his point, though it took him about eight and a half hours to do it.
He doesn't like the tax cut deal negotiated by the White House and congressional Republican leaders. And throughout most of Friday, he stayed on the Senate floor, explaing and explaining, almost nonstop, from 10:25 a.m. until around 7 p.m.
The independent senator detests the extension of tax breaks for the very wealthy. As he spoke, he attracted a huge internet following, and two web sites sprung up: http://isberniestillfilibustering.com/ and isberniesandersstilltalking.com.
Sanders railed against "tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires who don't need it," as he spoke to a largely empty Senate chamber. But he attracted a huge twitter following, and his own site provided constant updates.
But Sanders'' effort, technically not a filibuster, is probably doomed. The Senate will vote Monday afternoon to limit debate, and that bid is expected to get the 60 votes needed. That means Senate passage of the bill is likely to come swiftly.
